लेखिका के बारे में
सेल्मा लेगरलेफ (1858–1940) एक स्वीडिश लेखिका थीं जिनकी कहानियाँ कई भाषाओं में अनुवादित हो चुकी हैं। उनकी सभी कहानियों में एक सार्वभौमिक विषय दिखाई देता है — यह विश्वास कि किसी भी इंसान की मूलभूत अच्छाई को समझ और प्रेम के माध्यम से जगाया जा सकता है। यह कहानी स्वीडन की खदानों की पृष्ठभूमि में आधारित है, जो वहाँ की लौह अयस्क (iron ore) से समृद्ध हैं और देश के इतिहास व लोककथाओं में महत्वपूर्ण स्थान रखती हैं। यह कहानी एक प्रकार की परीकथा (fairy tale) की शैली में सुनाई गई है।

Once upon a time there was a man who went around selling small rattraps of wire.

He had naturally been thinking of his rattraps when suddenly he was struck by the idea that the whole world about him — the whole world with its lands and seas, its cities and villages — was nothing but a big rattrap.
