English Consonant Sounds – Complete & Easy Guide to 24 Sounds, Types & Pronunciation

1. Introduction: English Consonant Sounds

पिछले पोस्ट में English vowels and English vowel sound के बारे में जाना था। English pronunciation सीखने के लिए केवल vowel sounds जानना पर्याप्त नहीं है। सही pronunciation, listening और speaking के लिए consonant sounds (व्यंजन ध्वनियाँ) को समझना भी बहुत जरूरी है। English consonants को सीखते समय केवल A, B, C, D… letters याद करना पर्याप्त नहीं है, क्योंकि consonant letters और consonant sounds हमेशा एक जैसे नहीं होते।

इस article में हम English के 24 consonant sounds, उनके प्रकार, Hindi approximation, examples, voiced और voiceless sounds तथा -s/-es और -ed endings की pronunciation को आसान तरीके से समझेंगे।

2. English Consonant Letters and Consonant Sounds

English pronunciation सीखने से पहले consonant letters और consonant sounds के बीच का अंतर समझना जरूरी है।

1. English Consonant Letters

जैसा कि आप जांते है कि English alphabet में कुल 26 letters होते हैं। इनमें सामान्यतः:

5 vowel letters – A, E, I, O, U

21 consonant letters – B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z

B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z

21 consonant letters का मतलब 21 consonant sounds नहीं है।

English में 21 consonant letters होते हैं।एक consonant letter एक से अधिक sounds दे सकता है, और एक sound को कभी-कभी एक से अधिक letters मिलकर उत्पन्न करते हैं।

3. Consonant Letters और Consonant Sounds

Consonant letter और consonant sound दो अलग अलग चीज है ।

Consonant Letter: जो हम लिखते हैं

उदाहरण: C in cat

Consonant Sound: जो हम बोलते और सुनते हैं।

cat → /kæt/

यहाँ letter C का sound /k/ /क/ है।

लेकिन: city → /ˈsɪti/

यहाँ वही letter C का sound /s/ /स /है।

इसलिए: One consonant letter can represent different consonant sounds.

1. Some Important Examples

Letter C

C → /k/

cat, cup, cold

लेकिन:

C → /s/

city, cent, cycle

Letter G

G → /ɡ/

go, give, game

लेकिन:

G → /dʒ/

giant, age, giraffe

Letter X

Letter X अक्सर एक single consonant sound नहीं देता।

box → /ks/ /क्स/

exam → /ɡz/ /ग्ज/

इसलिए spelling और sound में difference हो सकता है।

Letter Y

Y consonant letter की तरह:

yes → /j/ /य/

लेकिन कुछ words में Y vowel sound represent कर सकता है:

happy → /i/ /इ/

इसलिए Y का role context पर depend करता है।

4. What Are Consonant Sounds?

Consonant sounds वे speech sounds हैं जिनके pronunciation के दौरान हवा के रास्ते में पूर्ण या आंशिक रुकावट (obstruction) आती है।

उदाहरण:

 /p/ → pen

 /b/ → book

 /t/ → ten

 /k/ → cat

इन sounds को बोलते समय lips, tongue, teeth या अन्य speech organs हवा के flow को रोकते या सीमित करते हैं।

 Vowel और Consonant में अंतर

Vowel: हवा का रास्ता relatively खुला रहता है।

Consonant: हवा के रास्ते में किसी न किसी प्रकार की obstruction होती है।

 Simple Rule:

 Vowel = relatively free airflow

 Consonant = obstructed airflow

5. How Many Consonant Sounds Are There in English?

Standard British English pronunciation system में सामान्यतः 24 consonant sounds पढ़ाए जाते हैं।

इन 24 sounds को पाँच मुख्य groups में बाँटा जाता है:

1. Plosive Sounds – 6

2. Fricative Sounds – 9

3. Affricate Sounds – 2

4. Nasal Sounds – 3

5. Approximant Sounds – 4

Total

6 + 9 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 24 consonant sounds

6. Types of English Consonant Sounds

1.Plosive Sounds

Plosive sounds में हवा को पहले पूरी तरह रोककर फिर अचानक छोड़ा जाता है।

English में 6 plosive sounds हैं:

 IPA Sound Hindi Approximation Examples
 /p/   प                   pen, pig, cup
 /b/   ब                   bat, bag, cab
 /t/   त/ट                 ten, tea, cat
 /d/   द/ड                 dog, day, red
 /k/   क                   cat, key, back
 /ɡ/   ग                   go, give, bag

Plosive Sounds = 6

/p, b, t, d, k, ɡ/

2.  Fricative Sounds

Fricative sounds में हवा एक narrow passage से निकलती है, जिससे friction पैदा होती है।

English में 9 fricative sounds commonly taught हैं:

 IPA Sound Hindi Approximation Examples
 /f/   फ                   fish, fan, leaf
 /v/   व/व़                van, very, love
 /θ/   थ के करीब           think, three, bath
 /ð/   द/ध के करीब         this, they, mother
 /s/   स                   sun, sip, rice
 /z/   ज़                  zoo, zip, nose
 /ʃ/   श                   ship, fish, wash
 /ʒ/   ज़्ह/झ के करीब      measure, vision, pleasure
 /h/   ह                   hat, house, behind

Important: /θ/ और /ð/

Hindi-medium students के लिए /θ/ और /ð/ विशेष रूप से important हैं।

इनका pronunciation केवल Hindi के थ और द जैसा नहीं है। इन sounds को बोलते समय tongue की position महत्वपूर्ण होती है।

/θ/ → think, three, thank

/ð/ → this, that, they

3.  Affricate Sounds

Affricate sounds में पहले air(हवा ) को रोककर फिर friction के साथ छोड़ा जाता है।

English में 2 affricate sounds हैं:

 IPA Sound Hindi Approximation Examples
 /tʃ/  च                   chair, teacher, watch
 /dʒ/  ज                   job, age, bridge

 Affricates = 2

/tʃ, dʒ/

4.  Nasal Sounds

Nasal sounds में हवा मुख्य रूप से नाक (nose) के रास्ते से निकलती है।

English में 3 nasal consonant sounds हैं:

 IPA Sound Hindi Approximation Examples
 /m/   म                   man, summer, room
 /n/   न                   no, dinner, sun
 /ŋ/   ङ/ं के करीब         sing, long, English

महत्वपूर्ण बात : /ŋ/

/ŋ/ को Hindi के सामान्य न की तरह pronounce (उच्चारित) नहीं करना चाहिए।

उदाहरण: sing → /sɪŋ/

इस sound में tongue(जीभ) का पीछे का हिस्सा ऊपर की ओर उठता है।

5.  Approximant Sounds

Approximants में speech organs एक-दूसरे के करीब आते हैं, लेकिन इतना नहीं कि strong friction पैदा हो।

English में 4 approximant sounds हैं:

 IPA Sound Hindi Approximation Examples
 /r/   र                   red, rain, carry
 /j/   य                   yes, yellow, use
 /w/   व/उअ के करीब        wet, water, we
 /l/   ल                   leg, light, feel

 Approximants = 4

/r, j, w, l/

7. Complete Classification of 24 Consonant Sounds

8.Voiced and Voiceless Consonants

English consonant sounds का एक और तरीके से classify(वर्गीकरण) किया जाता है:

1.  Voiced Consonants

इनका pronunciation करते समय vocal cords vibrate (कम्पन) करती हैं।

Total:15

 /b, d, ɡ, v, ð, z, ʒ, dʒ, m, n, ŋ, r, j, w, l/

2.  Voiceless Consonants

इनका pronunciation करते समय vocal cords vibrate (कम्पन ) नहीं करतीं।

Total:9

 /p, t, k, f, θ, s, ʃ, h, tʃ/

3.  How to Identify Voiced and Voiceless Sounds?

एक आसान throat test करें।

अपनी उँगलियाँ गले पर रखें और बोलें:

/z/ /z/ /z/

आपको vibration(कम्पन) महसूस होगी।

अब बोलें:

/s/ /s/ /s/

आपको vibration महसूस नहीं होगी।

इसलिए:

/z/ = voiced

/s/ = voiceless

9. Voiced and Voiceless Pair

कई English consonant sounds pairs(जोड़ो) में आती हैं। इन pairs में mouth/tongue position समान होती है, लेकिन एक sound voiced और दूसरी voiceless होती है।

Important:

सभी consonant sounds की voiced/voiceless pair नहीं होती।

Commonly voiceless:

/h/

Correct pronunciation Listening skills Speaking fluencyमें बहुत महत्वपूर्ण role है।

11. Pronunciation of Plural -s/-es

Plural बनाते समय -s/-es की pronunciation हमेशा /s/ /स/नहीं होती।

इसके तीन common pronunciations हैं:

/s/, /z/ और /ɪz/

1.  -s = /s/ /स/

अगर singular word का अंतिम sound voiceless है, तो plural ending सामान्यतः /s/ होती है।

 book     books  /bʊks/
 cup      cups   /kʌps/
 hat      hats   /hæts/

Regular verbs के past tense में -ed लगाया जाता है, लेकिन -ed हमेशा /ɪd/ नहीं बोला जाता।

इसके तीन common pronunciations हैं:

/t/, /d/ और /ɪd/

1.  -ed = /t/

अगर verb का अंतिम sound voiceless है, तो -ed सामान्यतः /t/ pronounce होता है।

 Base Verb Past Tense Pronunciation
 work      worked     /wɜːrkt/     वर्क्ट
 walk      walked     /wɔːkt/      वॉक्ट
 wash      washed     /wɒʃt/       वॉश्ट
 laugh     laughed    /læft/       लैफ्ट
 help      helped     /helpt/      हेल्प्ट

Example: work → worked

work का अंतिम sound /k/ है और /k/ voiceless है।

इसलिए: worked → /wɜːrkt/ /वर्क्ट/

2.  -ed = /d/

अगर verb का अंतिम sound voiced है, तो -ed सामान्यतः /d/ pronounce होता है।

Plural -s/-es

 Condition             Sound    Example
Voiceless final sound /s/  cat → cats
Voiced final sound    /z/  dog → dogs
 /s, z, ʃ, ʒ, tʃ, dʒ/  /ɪz/ bus → buses

Past Tense -ed

 Condition             Sound    Example
Voiceless final sound /t/  work → worked
Voiced final sound    /d/  play → played
 Final /t/ or /d/      /ɪd/ want → wanted

Listening Skills

Spoken English में word endings हमेशा spelling की तरह सुनाई नहीं देतीं।

जब कोई speaker dogs बोलता है, तो ending /z/ होती है, न कि स्पष्ट “स”।

इसी तरह played का pronunciation /pleɪd/ है, न कि “play-ed”।

इन rules को समझने से students को spoken English को समझने में मदद मिलती है।

13. Common Consonant Pronunciation Problems for Hindi-Medium Students

कुछ English consonant sounds Hindi में exactly नहीं मिलतीं। इसलिए students को इन sounds पर विशेष ध्यान देना चाहिए:
