2. The Book That Saved the Earth -Summary

1.  Scene 1 – The Era of the Book

The play begins in the twenty-fifth century at the Museum of Ancient History on Planet Earth. The Historian welcomes the audience to the museum and introduces the twentieth century, which she describes as the “Era of the Book.” She explains that books were very important during that period.

There were books on almost every subject, from ant eaters to Zulus. Books taught people how, when, where and why to do things. They also provided information, education, illustrations and even decoration. The Historian is about to tell the audience how a book from that era played an important role in saving the Earth.

2.  The Book That Saved the Earth – The Historian Reveals the Secret

The Historian tells the audience about the strangest thing a book ever did—save the Earth. She refers to the Martian invasion of 2040, which never actually happened because a single book stopped the invasion. She asks the audience to guess what kind of book it was.

It was neither a noble encyclopaedia nor a book about rockets and missiles, but an ordinary book of nursery rhymes. The Historian then decides to show the audience what happened in 2040. She turns on the projector and leaves the stage. The spotlight shifts to the Great and Mighty Think-Tank, the Martian leader, who is sitting on a raised platform.

3.  Think-Tank and Noodle – The Martian Mission Begins

The scene shifts to the Mars Space Control, where Great and Mighty Think-Tank, the Commander-in-Chief of Mars, is preparing to invade Earth. His apprentice, Noodle, praises him as the most powerful and intelligent creature in the universe.

Commander-in-Chief Great and Mighty Think-Tank

Think-Tank proudly accepts the praise and asks Noodle about their plan to communicate with the space probe sent to Earth. Noodle informs him that the probe is ready and that they are going to put Earth under their generous rulership.

Think-Tank looks at Earth and considers it an insignificant place. He then asks for his mirror because he wants to admire his own intelligence and appearance. Looking at himself in the mirror, he boasts about his superior intelligence and handsome appearance.

He orders Noodle to keep studying the Earthlings so that they can eventually develop a balloon-like head as intelligent as his. Finally, Think-Tank orders Noodle to contact the space probe and begin the invasion of Earth.

4. Scene 2 – The Martian Crew Discovers the Books

A few seconds later, the scene shifts to Mars Space Control and the Centerville Public Library. Captain Omega and her crew—Lieutenant Iota and Sergeant Oop—have landed on Earth safely and taken shelter in what they believe to be some kind of storage place. Noodle informs Think-Tank that he has a close view of the space crew.

Captain Omega contacts Mars Space Control and reports that they have arrived on Earth without any difficulty. Lieutenant Iota says that they are surrounded by thousands of strange objects. She has counted about two thousand of them and thinks the place may be a storage barn. Sergeant Oop also cannot identify the objects. He picks up a book and jokingly puts it on his head, thinking that it might be a hat.

Captain Omega suggests that they ask Great and Mighty Think-Tank for help in understanding these mysterious objects.

5. Think-Tank Mistakes a Book for a Sandwich

Think-Tank asks Captain Omega to hold one of the objects so that he can examine it closely. Seeing the book, he confidently identifies the place as a refreshment stand, because he believes Earth creatures are always eating. He then declares that the object in Omega’s hand is a sandwich. Think-Tank explains that sandwiches are an important part of the Earth diet and points out the two slices of bread and the filling between them.

Think-Tank orders Lieutenant Iota to eat the sandwich. When Iota hesitates, he orders Sergeant Oop to eat it instead. Oop reluctantly takes a bite of the book and immediately finds it terrible. He complains that Earthlings must have a strange way of making sandwiches. At this point, Noodle gives Think-Tank some information: he has seen surveyor films showing that Earthlings do not eat these sandwiches but use them as a means of communication.

Think-Tank proudly concludes that these are actually “communication sandwiches” and boasts that he is never wrong. He then orders everyone to listen to them.

6. The Martians Discover the Real “Sandwich”

Think-Tank orders Captain Omega, Lieutenant Iota, and Sergeant Oop to listen to the books, believing that they are communication sandwiches. They hold the books close to their ears but hear nothing. Think-Tank becomes annoyed and wonders whether they are listening at the wrong frequency. Noodle then reminds him that Earthlings did not actually listen to these “sandwiches”; they opened and read them.

Think-Tank realizes his mistake and explains that the books are not meant for the ears but for the eyes. He then asks Captain Omega to pick up a large, colourful “sandwich” and tell him what she observes. Omega picks up a large copy of Mother Goose, setting the stage for the next important misunderstanding that will eventually save the Earth.

7. Think-Tank Misinterprets the Nursery Rhyme

Captain Omega observes that the large book contains pictures of Earthlings, while Lieutenant Iota notices thousands of strange lines, dots and squiggles beside the pictures. Think-Tank assumes that these marks are a secret code used by the Earthlings and orders his crew to decipher it. He also believes that the Earthlings may be more advanced than the Martians had thought.

Noodle reminds Think-Tank that their scientists had given the space crew vitamins to increase their intelligence. Think-Tank immediately takes the credit for the idea and orders everyone to swallow the vitamins. After taking them, the Martians begin reading the book. Captain Omega reads the nursery rhyme “Mistress Mary, quite contrary…”.

Captain Omega “Mistress Mary, quite contrary…”

Instead of understanding it as a simple nursery rhyme, Think-Tank completely misunderstands its meaning. He believes that the Earthlings have discovered how to combine agriculture and mining. He thinks they can grow crops of rare metals such as silver and even produce explosives.

He becomes frightened and orders Noodle to contact the invasion crew. However, before the invasion can begin, Think-Tank receives another important piece of information about Earth.

8. Think-Tank Mistakes Humpty Dumpty for a Martian Leader

Think-Tank becomes even more frightened after hearing the nursery rhymes. He believes that the Earthlings have reached a very high level of civilisation because they have taught their animals music, culture and space techniques. He is particularly alarmed by the rhyme about Humpty Dumpty, which he thinks describes an attack on Mars.

When Sergeant Oop reads the rhyme “Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall…” and shows Think-Tank the picture of Humpty Dumpty, Think-Tank is shocked. He believes that the picture is actually his own portrait and thinks that the Earthlings have discovered his identity and are planning to capture him. जब Sergeant Oop “Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall…”

He immediately assumes that Earth is preparing to invade Mars Frightened, Think-Tank orders Noodle to prepare a space capsule for him and commands the Martian invasion fleet to leave Mars. He decides to escape to Alpha Centauri, a planet a hundred million miles away. Thus, his own misunderstanding and fear cause him to cancel the invasion and flee from Mars.

9. The Historian Reveals How the Book Saved the Earth

The Historian explains that the old book of nursery rhymes, Mother Goose, saved the Earth from a Martian invasion. Five hundred years later, in the twenty-fifth century, the Earthlings resumed contact with Mars and became friendly with the Martians. By that time, Great and Mighty Think-Tank had been replaced by Noodle, who was wise and clever.

The Earthlings taught the Martians the difference between sandwiches and books and also taught them how to read. They even established a model library in the Martian capital, Marsopolis. However, there was still one book that the Martians could never bring themselves to read. The Historian reveals that this book was Mother Goose. The play ends with this humorous revelation.

3.  The Book That Saved the Earth – Question Answers

1. Think About It – Answers

 1. Noodle avoids offending Think-Tank but at the same time he corrects his mistakes. How does he manage to do that?
Answer:

Noodle is very clever and diplomatic. He never directly tells Think-Tank that he is wrong. Instead, he politely gives him the correct information and allows Think-Tank to believe that the idea was his own. In this way, Noodle corrects Think-Tank without hurting his pride.

 2. If you were in Noodle’s place, how would you handle Think-Tank’s mistakes?
Answer:

If I were in Noodle’s place, I would handle Think-Tank’s mistakes politely and patiently. I would explain the correct facts without insulting or embarrassing him. I would use a respectful and diplomatic approach so that he could understand his mistakes easily.

3. Do you think books are being replaced by electronic media? Can we do away with books altogether?
Answer:

Yes, electronic media has reduced the use of printed books to some extent. People now read e-books, websites and digital documents on mobile phones, tablets and computers. However, books cannot be completely replaced because they are easy to read, reliable and do not require electricity or the internet. Books will continue to remain an important source of knowledge.

 4. Why are books referred to as “a man’s best companion”? Which is your favourite book and why?
Answer:

Books are called “a man’s best companion” because they give us knowledge, guidance and entertainment. They never leave us alone and can teach us valuable lessons about life. My favourite book is the Bhagavad Gita because it teaches us how to remain calm, perform our duties and face difficulties with courage.

2. Talk About It – Answers

 1. In what ways does Think-Tank misinterpret innocent nursery rhymes as threats to the Martians?
Answer:
Think-Tank misunderstands simple nursery rhymes because he thinks that the Earthlings are highly advanced and dangerous. He interprets “Mistress Mary” as evidence that Earthlings can grow metals and explosives. He also thinks that “Humpty Dumpty” is his own picture and believes that the Earthlings have discovered his identity and are planning to capture him. His wrong interpretations create fear and finally make him cancel the invasion of Earth.

 2. The aliens in this play speak English. Do you think this is their language? What could be the language of the aliens?
Answer:

No, English is probably not the real language of the aliens. They speak English in the play so that the audience can understand the story and the dialogue easily. In reality, the aliens might have their own Martian language, which could be completely different from English.
