2.Bholi Class 10 English:Summary
1. Bholi’s Childhood
Bholi’s real name was Sulekha. She was the fourth daughter and the youngest of Ramlal’s seven children. Ramlal was the Numberdar of the village. He had three sons and four daughters.
When Bholi was ten months old, she fell from her cot on her head. It was believed that the fall had damaged some part of her brain. She remained a backward child and came to be known as Bholi, meaning a simpleton.
At birth, Bholi was fair and pretty. But when she was two years old, she suffered from smallpox. The disease spared only her eyes, while her body was permanently disfigured by deep black pock-marks.
Bholi could not speak until she was five years old. When she finally learned to speak, she stammered. Other children often made fun of her and mimicked her. As a result, she became very quiet and spoke very little.
2. Bholi’s Family
Ramlal had seven children—three sons and four daughters. His sons were sent to the city to study in schools and later in colleges.
Among his daughters, Radha, the eldest, was already married. Mangla, the second daughter, had also had her marriage settled. After that, Ramlal would think about the marriage of Champa, the third daughter. The three girls were good-looking and healthy, so it was not difficult to find bridegrooms for them.
Bholi was the youngest daughter. Ramlal was worried about her because he believed that she had neither good looks nor intelligence.
3. Bholi Goes to School
When a new primary school opened in the village, the Tehsildar visited the school. He told Ramlal that, as the village Numberdar/Revenue official, he should send one of his daughters to school.
Ramlal decided to send Bholi because he thought that she was unlikely to get married anyway.
The next day, when Ramlal took Bholi to school, she became frightened. She did not know what a school was like. She remembered that a few days earlier their old cow, Lakshmi, had been turned out of the house and sold. Bholi feared that she might also be taken away and sold. She pulled her hand away from her father’s grip and cried, “N-n-n-n NO, no-no-no.”
4. The Kind Teacher
At school, Bholi met a kind and caring teacher. The teacher spoke to her gently and encouraged her to speak without fear. She did not laugh at Bholi’s stammering. Instead, she assured her that she would help her learn.
The teacher’s kindness gave Bholi hope and confidence. She taught Bholi that she should not be afraid and that education could help her become a confident person.
5. Transformation of Bholi
Gradually, Bholi gained confidence. Education changed her personality. The girl who had once been frightened to speak before others became an educated, confident and courageous young woman.
She learned to express her thoughts and make her own decisions. She no longer considered herself helpless or inferior to others.
6. Bishambar Nath and the Marriage Proposal
After several years, Bholi’s parents arranged her marriage with Bishambar Nath, a well-to-do grocer.
Bishambar was a widower. He was almost the same age as Ramlal, about 45–50 years old. He also limped slightly and had grown-up children from his first wife.
Bholi’s mother considered the proposal fortunate because Bishambar was wealthy. She feared that Bholi might remain unmarried if they rejected the proposal because of her pock-marks and lack of sense.
7. Bholi’s Parents Underestimate Her
Bholi’s mother did not think that Bholi was capable of making an important decision. She called her a “witless one” and compared her to a “dumb cow.”
However, Bholi was awake in the other corner of the courtyard and was listening to her parents’ conversation. The words deeply affected her.
8. The Dowry Demand
At first, Bishambar did not ask for any dowry. However, during the wedding ceremony, he saw Bholi’s face closely and noticed her pock-marks. He suddenly demanded ₹5,000 as dowry.
Ramlal was ashamed and distressed. He collected the money and gave it to Bishambar.
But Bholi had changed. She was no longer the frightened and helpless girl her family believed her to be.
9. Bholi Refuses to Marry Bishambar
Bholi refused to marry Bishambar because she realized that he was greedy and did not respect her. She confidently rejected the marriage in front of everyone.
Her decision shocked her parents and the wedding guests. The girl whom her mother had called a “witless one” now showed great courage and wisdom.
10. Bholi’s Final Decision
Bholi told her parents that she would serve them in their old age. She also decided to teach at the same school where she had received her education.
Her teacher was proud of her.
Bholi had finally become a confident, courageous and self-respecting woman.
11. Conclusion
The story Bholi shows that education can transform a person’s life. It gives confidence, courage and self-respect to those who are neglected or treated as inferior.
The story also criticizes the dowry system and the practice of judging people by their physical appearance. Bholi’s courageous decision proves that self-respect and dignity are more important than an unjust marriage.

4.Bholi – Textbook Questions and Answers
1. Think About It
1. Bholi had many apprehensions about going to school. What made her feel that she was going to a better place than her home?
Answer:
Bholi was initially frightened because she did not know what a school was like. However, when she reached school, the teacher welcomed her warmly and spoke to her kindly. She did not laugh at her stammering or pock-marks. Instead, she encouraged Bholi to speak without fear and promised to help her. Bholi realized that the teacher cared for her. This made her feel that school was a better place than her home.
2. How did Bholi’s teacher play an important role in changing the course of her life?
Answer:
Bholi’s teacher changed her life through kindness, encouragement and education. She did not consider Bholi inferior because of her appearance or stammering. She encouraged her to speak without fear and gave her confidence. Gradually, Bholi became educated and self-confident. Education enabled her to express herself and make her own decisions. Finally, she courageously refused to marry Bishambar when he demanded dowry. Thus, the teacher became the turning point in Bholi’s life.
3. Why did Bholi at first agree to an unequal match? Why did she later reject the marriage? What does this tell us about her?
Answer:
Bholi initially agreed to the marriage because she had been neglected by her family and had little confidence in herself. She thought that Bishambar’s proposal was a good opportunity. However, she later rejected the marriage when he demanded ₹5,000 as dowry. Her education had made her confident and self-respecting. She realized that a greedy man who demanded dowry did not deserve to be her husband. Her decision shows her courage, wisdom and self-respect.
4. Bholi’s real name is Sulekha. We are told this right at the beginning. But only in the last but one paragraph of the story is Bholi called Sulekha again. Why do you think she is called Sulekha at that point in the story?
Answer:
At the beginning, Sulekha is called Bholi because she is considered a backward, simple and helpless girl. However, at the end, she has become confident, educated and self-respecting. She has overcome the fear and weakness associated with the name Bholi. Therefore, calling her Sulekha again suggests that she has regained her true identity and is no longer the helpless girl whom everyone had underestimated.
5. Bholi’s story must have moved you. Do you think girl children are not treated at par with boys?
Answer:
Yes, the story shows that girls may sometimes be treated differently from boys. In Bholi’s family, the sons are sent to the city for higher education, while the daughters are mainly seen in terms of marriage. Bholi herself is neglected because of her appearance and disability. Education and equal opportunities can help girls become confident and independent. The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme also focuses on valuing, protecting and educating the girl child. ([Ministry of Women and Child Development][1])

2. Think About It
1. Bholi’s teacher helped her overcome social barriers by encouraging and motivating her. How do you think you can contribute towards changing the social attitudes illustrated in this story?
Answer:
We can help change such social attitudes by treating everyone with respect and kindness. We should not judge people by their appearance, disability, social status or weaknesses. We should encourage children who lack confidence and support equal opportunities in education. We should also speak against practices such as dowry and discrimination. By spreading awareness and treating everyone equally, we can help create a more respectful and inclusive society.
2. Should girls be aware of their rights, and assert them? Should girls and boys have the same rights, duties and privileges? What are some of the ways in which society treats them differently? When we speak of ‘human rights’, do we differentiate between girls’ rights and boys’ rights?
Answer:
Yes, girls should be aware of their rights and should be able to express their views and make decisions about their lives. Girls and boys should have equal rights, duties and opportunities. Society may sometimes treat them differently in areas such as education, freedom, household responsibilities and career choices. Human rights apply equally to everyone, regardless of gender. Equal opportunities and respect help both girls and boys develop their abilities and contribute to society.
3. Do you think the characters in the story were speaking to each other in English? If not, in which language were they speaking?
Answer:
No, the characters were probably not speaking to each other in English. The story is set in a village in India, and the characters have Indian names such as Ramlal, Bholi, Radha, Mangla and Bishambar. Words such as Numberdar, Tehsildar and Lakshmi also reflect the Indian setting. Therefore, they were most probably speaking Hindi or the local language of the village, while the story has been written and presented to us in English.
