He then went to Drury Lane, hoping to find clothes and something to hide his invisible head. He entered a theatrical shop and disguised himself with bandages, dark glasses, a false nose, side-whiskers and a large hat. To escape without being recognised, he attacked the shopkeeper from behind and stole his money.

Mrs Hall, the landlord’s wife, tried to be friendly, but Griffin wanted solitude and said that an accident had affected his face.
